This course will introduce students to the history of Andalusia and acquaint them with some of the major female scholars that flourished there. Their biographies and contributions will be studied in light of their historical context and the enduring legacy that emanates from the region. Islam spread through Spain, ruled over by caliphates and dynasties and contributing majorly to Islamic sciences, rational sciences, arts, crafts and more. Islamic rule in Spain lasted for over 700 years.

Course Overview

This lecture will introduce students to the history of Andalusia and acquaint them with some of the major female hadith scholars who flourished there. Their biographies and contributions will be studied in light of their historical context and the enduring legacy which emanates from the region. The crucial role played by women in hadith scholarship is often overlooked, providing an imbalanced view of past Islamic societies. The course corrects this by highlighting these contributions and demonstrates their sheer impact upon hadith scholarship, and the intellectual culture of the Islamic world in general
