Index of the Major Hadith Collections

In this course, students will go through the third and final part of the Bustan al-Muhaddithin anthology, covering compilations such as the Sahih of Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and the al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim. The course provides an understanding of the differences in methodology, classifications, and definitions employed by the muhaddithin of differing tiers.
Additionally, the collections of hadith scholars such as al-Daraqutni, al-Bayhaqi, and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi will be studied and assessed for their respective accuracy, purposes, and methodologies.

Course Overview

In this course, students will go through the third and final part of the Bustan al-Muhaddithin anthology, covering compilations such as the Sahih of Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and the al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim. The course looks at the differences between first and second tier collections, such as Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, and third tier collections by muhaddithin such as Ibn Hajr al-’Asqalani. Students will be provided with an understanding of the differences in methodology, classifications, and definitions employed by the muhaddithin of all tiers. Additionally, the collections of hadith scholars such as al-Daraqutni, al-Bayhaqi, and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi will be studied and assessed for their respective accuracy, purposes, and methodologies. The popularity of collecting 40 hadith on a given topic will be studied alongside the secondary collections of Imam Bukhari (al-Adab al-Mufrad), al-Nasa’i (Amal al-Yaym wa al-Laylah) and others in this third and final part of the Bustan al-Muhaddithin series.
